USA TODAY Sports' Tom Pelissero examines the most recent NFL head coaching hires of Sean McDermott to the Bills and Vance Joseph to the Broncos.
USA TODAY Sports
The Buffalo Bills have hired Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott as their next head coach.McDermott, 42, had a second interview with the team Wednesday and emerged as the team's choice to replace Rex Ryan, who was fired before the final week of his second season with the Bills.Buffalo also interviewed interim coach Anthony Lynn, Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin and Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard.
Under McDermott, the Panthers finished in the top 10 for total defense in four of the past six seasons. A stout group led by linebackers Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis helped push Carolina to Super Bowl 50 last season, though the unit struggled in 2016 after the loss of cornerback Josh Norman.McDermott also interviewed with the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers. He met last year with the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In Buffalo, he will be tasked with breaking the NFL's longest active playoff drought (17 seasons) and reviving a defense that ranked 19th in each of the past two seasons.Follow Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz on Twitter @MikeMSchwartz.
